The Vampiro cocktail was created in the early 1980’s by Oscar Hernadez, a fruit stand vendor in Jalisco, Mexico. He mixed citrus soda (Squirt) with Sangrita, a mixture of tomato juice, orange juice, lime juice and peppers/spices originally for his own enjoyment and to cool off. He drank it out of a plastic baggie with a straw and when customers noticed the red color, they commented that it looked like he was “sucking up blood’ which then led to the drinks name of Vampiro. He started selling the drink in the plastic baggies with a straw to his customers after perfecting the formula adding tequila and grenadine. Word of mouth quickly spread, and it has now become a national drink of Mexico. This delicious, unusual cocktail was way before its time, before spicy margaritas were even a thing. Cheers!
