Sparkling Cranberry Cape Cod

Imagine it’s the 1980’s, Reagan is president and you’re wearing yuppie boat shoes and a polo shirt with a Cape Cod cocktail in hand. The Cape Cod Cocktail or Cape Codder was all the rage back then but was actually developed as a marketing ploy by Ocean Spray in the 1940’s. Named after the Cape Cod region in Plymouth, Massachusetts which is famous for its cranberry bogs, the drink consisted of vodka and cranberry juice with lime and was originally called Red Devil. The name changed in the 1960’s since the Red Devil name never really took off. This sparkling holiday version adds in sugared cranberries, club soda, orange liqueur and simple syrup for a delicious, sweet and refreshing cranberry-orange taste. Enjoy!

Ingredients-Serves 1

For the Garnish

4 whole Cranberries

1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp Sugar

1/2 cup Water

1 Lime

For the Cocktail

1 1/2 oz Vodka

1/2 oz Cointreau (orange liqueur)

1 oz Cranberry Juice

1/2 oz Simple Syrup

4 oz. Club Soda

Directions

  1. Start by making the garnish. Rinse and dry the whole cranberries. In a small saucepan, add 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar. Stir and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in cranberries. Remove promptly before they pop as you just want to coat them with the simple syrup. Place them on a cookie sheet with parchment paper and let cool.
  2. While your cranberries are cooling, make the lime twist. Wash and dry 1 lime. Cut into a 1/2-inch wheel shape from the middle of the lime. Slice one end from center to end and stretch open. Cut away all the pulp leaving just the peel and a little pith. Wrap the lime peel around a straw to create a curl. Slide off straw and set aside.
  3. Add 2 tbsp sugar onto the parchment paper and roll the cranberries in the sugar. Pierce the cranberries onto a cocktail pick and set aside.
  4. In a cocktail shaker with ice, add the vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice and simple syrup. Shake to combine and pour over a tall glass with ice. Pour in the club soda and gently stir. Add the sugared cranberries and lime twist. Add a straw. Cheers!
