Do you remember going out to dinner with your parents as a kid and having a Shirley Temple drink? The Shirley Temple mocktail and the Dirty Shirley cocktail are the perfect mocktail/cocktail dual with each utilizing the same basic ingredients. The Shirley Temple mocktail was created in the 1930’s for child actress Shirley Temple because she couldn’t have alcoholic drinks like her parents but wanted something “special.” It was said to have been created in Hollywood by a bartender at Chasen’s or the Brown Derby. It traditionally consisted of grenadine syrup, ginger ale and a maraschino cherry. Although it was originally created for children, it’s a great mocktail for all ages. The Dirty Shirley is the “adult” version adding vodka to the mix of grenadine and usually lemon lime soda or ginger ale and of course the maraschino cherry. Both drinks feature an easy 3 ingredient homemade grenadine syrup with no added artificial ingredients. Grenadine is a pomegranate syrup and is so easy to make. The added cherry flavor in the ginger ale (Shirley Temple) and the vodka (Dirty Shirley) compliments the pomegranate for a taste sensation. Which one will you choose? Cheers!

Ingredients
For the Grenadine Syrup
- 1 cup Pomegranate Juice (I used Pom Wonderful)
- 2/3 cup Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
For the Mocktail (Shirley Temple)
- 1 oz Grenadine
- Cherry Ginger Ale to top (Canada Dry)
- Maraschino Cherry (Mezzetta)
For the Cocktail (Dirty Shirley)
- 2 oz Cherry Vodka (Pinnacle)
- 1 oz Grenadine
- Ginger Ale to top (Canada Dry)
- Maraschino Cherry (Mezzetta)
Method
- Make the Grenadine. In a small saucepan, add the pomegranate juice, sugar and lemon juice. Heat over medium heat, whisking regularly until it comes to a simmer. Simmer 5 minutes and remove from heat. Let cool and pour into a glass container. It will keep in the fridge for up to a month.
- Make the mocktail (Shirley Temple) Add ice to a tall glass. Pour in the grenadine. Add the cherry ginger ale to top. Add a straw and maraschino cherry. Cheers!
