Rum Rum Rudolph

Inspired by the famous reindeer, Rudolph, this cherry rum and coke is sure to be a festive addition to your holidays. Although there isn’t much history about the creation of this cocktail, there is about Rudolph. Created in 1939 by Robert L. May, a Montgomery Ward copy writer, the story about Rudolph was originally designed for a promotional give away. It was then turned into a song, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, by May’s brother in-law, Johnny L. Marks, which was recorded and sung by Gene Autry in 1949. Run Rudolph Run was recorded in 1958 By Chuck Berry and was a hit as well as the beloved TV special which came out in 1964. I’ve taken this cocktail up a notch and am using Tiki Lovers Banana Rum, which is crafted from a blend of premium pot and column still rums from Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. It is infused with naturally sun ripened banana in a rich rum base and has the flavors of banana, caramelized sugar, molasses, vanilla and tropical fruit. Cheers!

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jigger
  • Hurricane Glass
  • Thin Wire
  • Wire Cutters
  • Small Wooden Clips

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Rum (Tiki Lovers Banana Rum)
  • 1.5 oz Tart Cherry Juice
  • 4 oz Coca Cola
  • Maraschino Cherry for garnish
  • Rosemary for garnish

Method

  1. Prepare your garnish. Cut a piece of thin wire (about 7.5 inches). Bend into a U shape. Skewer a Maraschino cherry onto the wire and slide into the middle (this is Rudolph’s nose). Bend the two ends of the wire over the edge of the glass (about 3/4 inch on each side). Remove and set aside. Cut 2 sprigs of rosemary in half. Set aside.
  2. Make the cocktail. Add the rum and tart cherry juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to combine and strain into an ice filled hurricane glass. Add the coca cola to top.
  3. Garnish. Hook the wire with Rudolph’s nose onto the edge of the glass. Take a rosemary sprig and place under the wire (outer edge) on the backside of the glass and secure with the wooden clip (this is Rudolph’s antlers). Repeat on the other side. Cheers!
