Midori Sour

Was the Midori Sour the cocktail that defined the 80s? No other cocktail says 1980s quite as much as the Midori Sour. With its bright fluorescent green color and fruity taste, it represented the eras fondness for bright colors, fruity flavors and a touch of playful excess. Midori, a Japanese melon flavored liqueur, launched in the U.S in 1978 by Suntory. Midori, which translates to the word “green” in Japanese, is a sweet liqueur made from Yubari and Muskmelons, two melons which only grow in Japan. It quickly became popular, especially after being introduced at Studio 54 in New York City. The Midori Sour consists of Midori, lemon and lime juice (or usually a sour mix in the 80s), simple syrup, vodka and is topped off with club soda. I’m taking it up a notch and have added a slight hint of Absinthe to the cocktail which contributes an herbal, anise-like flavor and aroma which complements the melon and citrus notes of the Midori Sour beautifully. Cheers!
