Cupid’s Arrow

Celebrate this Valentines (or Galentines) Day with the Cupid’s Arrow cocktail! This easy and delicious dessert cocktail features the flavors of chocolate and strawberry because who doesn’t love chocolate covered strawberries? I couldn’t find much history about this cocktail other than the fact that there are ALOT of different versions, so here are some fun facts about Cupid instead. 1. Cupid is known as the God of Love and has both Greek and Roman origins. 2. In Greek mythology, he is believed to be the son of Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of love) and Ares (the Greek god of war), and is known as Eros, while in Roman culture he is believed to be the son of Venus (Roman Goddess of love) and Mercury (the Roman winged messenger of the gods) and is known as Cupid 3. The name Cupid or Cupido means desire in Latin. 4. Cupid is a mischievous matchmaker and has two enchanted arrows, a gold tipped one and a lead one. He fires golden arrows at people to make them fall in love and leaden arrows to make them fall out of love. 5. The cherubic, flying baby version of Cupid began being associated with Valentines Day by 19th century Victorians and has been a symbol ever since. Be on the lookout for Cupid’s arrows this Valentines Day because you never know when or where you’ll be struck. Enjoy!

Equipment:

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jigger
  • Coupe glass
  • Cocktail Pick
  • Small saucepan
  • Small plate
  • Measuring cup
  • Fine Mesh Strainer
  • Glass container

Ingredients – Serves 1

For the Garnish:

  • Hardening Chocolate (I used Hershey’s Shell Topping)
  • Chocolate Covered Strawberry

For the Cocktail:

  • 1.5 oz Strawberry Vodka (I used Smirnoff)
  • 1.5 oz White Chocolate Liqueur
  • .75 oz Strawberry Simple Syrup
  • .25 oz Grenadine
  • 8 oz Strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup sugar

Method:

  1. Make the Strawberry Simple Syrup. In a small saucepan combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup strawberries (stems removed and cut into small pieces). Bring to a boil, stir and let simmer for 20 min. Let cool and strain into a glass container. You can save the rest in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
  2. Rim your cocktail glass (I used a Coupe glass). Shake the hardening chocolate well and pour onto a small plate. Dip your Coupe glass edge in the chocolate straight down, lift up and hold it upside down for a few seconds to catch any drips. Place in freezer immediately (right side up) to harden the chocolate, prevent drips and to chill your Coupe glass. Pro tip: Always freeze/chill your coupe glass before serving.
  3. Prepare your garnish. Pierce a Chocolate Covered Strawberry diagonally with a cocktail pick. Set aside. (I used store bought chocolate covered strawberries, but you can make your own with the Hershey’s hardening chocolate).
  4. In a shaker filled with ice, combine the Strawberry Vodka, White Chocolate Liqueur, Strawberry Simple Syrup and Grenadine. Shake to combine (30 seconds) and strain into your chilled Coupe glass. Garnish with the Chocolate Covered Strawberry. Cheers!
