Cosmockpolitan

In honor of dry January, I bring to you the CosMOCKpolitan mocktail (see what I did there lol?). It is a nonalcoholic take on the Cosmopolitan cocktail which became very popular in the 1990’s especially, among women. There are many disputed claims as to who and where the original Cosmopolitan cocktail was created but it appears to have started in the 1970’s gay community when cranberry juice was added to a Kamikaze and the bartender exclaimed “How Cosmopolitan!”. It became very popular in the 1990’s when Madonna was seen sipping one at a bar and also the show “Sex and the City” which was the character Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite drink. It consists of citron vodka. Cointreau, cranberry and lime juice. I used a citrus nonalcoholic vodka and the delicious Ripe Bar Juice Cosmopolitan Mix to mimic the original and it couldn’t be easier to make. If you don’t have the mix, instructions are included to make it without. Cheers!

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jigger
  • Cutting Board
  • Knife
  • Wooden Matches
  • Martini Glass

Ingredients – Serves 1

  • 2 oz Nonalcoholic Vodka
  • 4 oz Cosmopolitan Mix (Ripe Bar Juice) or 2 oz Cranberry Juice, 1 oz Orange Juice and 1 oz Lime Juice if not using the mix.
  • 1 Orange for Orange Peel Coin
  • 1 Lime for Lime Twist Garnish

Method

  1. Prepare you garnish. Wash and dry an orange and lime. Cut a round piece of orange peel for the orange coin (at least a quarter size). Set aside. Cut a 1/4-inch lime wheel from the center of the lime. Cut a slit in one side and stretch apart. Peel or cut away the pulp. Clean up the edges with a knife if needed and twist around a straw. Slide off and set aside.
  2. Make the Cocktail. Add the nonalcoholic vodka and cosmopolitan mix (or equivalent) to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to combine and strain into a beautiful martini glass.
  3. Flame the Orange Peel. Hold the orange peel coin over the cocktail between your thumb and index finger. Light a wooden match and hold over the cocktail in front of the orange peel. Squeeze the orange peel to express the oils over the cocktail (you should see a flame). Run the peel around the edge of your glass and drop in cocktail.
  4. Garnish. Garnish with the lime twist on the side of your glass. Cheers!
