Rusty Nail

Rusty Nail, a long forgotten classic cocktail popular in the 1950’s-60’s, was said to be Frank Sinatra’s favorite cocktail. It consists of just two ingredients-Scotch Whiskey (an oak barrel aged whiskey made only in Scotland) and Drambuie (a Scotch based liqueur blended with heather honey, herbs and spices, also from Scotland). The cocktail originated in 1937 at the British Industries Fair and was called B.I.F (named after the fair). It was also said to have been created at a Hawaiian bar in 1942 and later served by New Yorks Club 21. After numerous name changes (it was also called a Mig 21, Little Club No and Knucklehead), it officially became known as the Rusty Nail in 1963 due to its amber appearance from the Scotch and endorsed by the Drambuie company. Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack were so enamored by the cocktail it became their “go to cocktail” and was probably what was sometimes in Dean Martins glass (besides apple juice) whenever he appeared drunk on stage in Las Vegas. Cheers!

Equipment:

  • Jigger
  • Mixing Glass (optional)
  • Rocks Glass
  • Ice Mold
  • Bar Spoon
  • Knife

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Scotch Whiskey (I used Dewar’s aged 12 years)
  • .75 oz Drambuie
  • Orange twist for garnish

Method:

  1. Start by making the ice ball. You will need a mold to create a large round or square ice cube which will take 24 hours to freeze. You can also use regular ice cubes instead.
  2. Put the ice of choice (large round, square or regular cubes) in your rocks glass. If using the large round, you can give it a spin for fun:)
  3. Pour the Scotch over the ice, then the Drambuie.
  4. Stir. *Note-You can mix the cocktail right in your glass as described or alternatively mix in a mixing glass with ice until well chilled and strain into the rocks glass.
  5. While your cocktail is chilling, make the orange twist garnish. Cut a 1/2 ich wheel from the center of the orange. Cut a slit on one side and open up. Gently peel away the pulp. Twist the peel around a bar spoon or straw.
  6. Place the orange twist in the cocktail and enjoy!
