Gingerbread Espresso Martini

Get a jump start on your holiday “to do” list with the Gingerbread Espresso Martini! The Espresso Martini was created in the 1980s by Dick Bradsell in London and was originally called the Vodka Espresso. This holiday version features the traditional flavors of gingerbread (brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and vanilla) and the wonderful aromatic flavor of coffee. I’m using Black Twist Coffee Liqueur in this cocktail which is crafted using the finest Brazilian Arabica coffee beans that is cold brewed in triple distilled whiskey inside oak casks. This extraordinary coffee liqueur has the delicious flavors of coffee and vanilla with a chocolate finish. Cheers!

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jigger
  • Coupe or Martini Glass
  • 2 small plates
  • Plastic baggie
  • Mallet
  • Small Saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring Spoons

Ingredients – Serves 1

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • .75 oz Coffee Liqueur (I used Black Twist)
  • .5 oz Gingerbread Syrup
    • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
    • 1/2 cup Filtered Water
    • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
    • 1/4 tsp Ground Ginger
    • 1/8 tsp Ground Cloves
    • 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 oz Espresso or Dark Roast Coffee
  • Pinch Sea Salt
  • Maple Syrup for Rim
  • 3-4 Crushed Gingerbread Cookies
  • Cinnamon for Garnish
  • 3 Coffee Beans for Garnish

Method

  1. Make the gingerbread syrup. Add all syrup ingredients except the vanilla extract to a small saucepan. Stir. Bring to a simmer over medium heat until the brown sugar dissolves, continue to simmer for 3 min. Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract. Stir and let cool.
  2. Prepare your glass. Place 3-4 gingerbread cookies in a plastic baggie, seal and crush with a wooden mallet. Add maple syrup and the crushed gingerbread cookies to 2 separate plates. Roll the rim of your glass in the maple syrup then the cookie crumbs. Place the glass in the freezer to chill.
  3. Make the cocktail. Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, gingerbread syrup, espresso and sea salt to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously (30 seconds) to create foam. Strain into the chilled coupe or martini glass.
  4. Garnish. Sprinkle some cinnamon over the foam and 3 coffee beans. Cheers!
