Add a little magic to your Halloween with this Harry Potter inspired Polyjuice Potion. It will mysteriously change colors before your eyes! Ok, it’s not exactly magic but here’s the secret ingredient-Butterfly Pea Powder. What is Butterfly Pea Powder? It is an all-natural blue powder made from the dried flowers of the Butterfly Pea plant from Asia. When mixed with an acid (lemon Juice) it will change colors from blue to pink. This mysterious color changing cocktail is based with Gin (I used Dingle Gin from Ireland), Elderflower Liqueur (St. Germain), Simple syrup, Lemon Juice and of course the Butterfly Pea Powder. If you’ve seen the Harry Potter movies, you know the Polyjuice potion was used to temporarily change into another human and the effect can last from 10 minutes to 12 hours. Changing into another species (animal) is not recommended as there can be some side effects when changing back lol. The potion required a body part of the person you want to change into such as hair, toenail clippings etc. This bewitching potion is not nearly as gross as in the movie though I promise. Cheers!
Equipment
- Mixing Glass or Pyrex Measuring Cup
- Bar Spoon
- Cocktail Shaker
- Measuring Spoons
- Jigger
- Spooky Halloween Glass
Ingredients – Serves 1
- 1 oz Gin (Dingle)
- 1/2 oz Elderflower Liqueur (St Germain)
- 4 oz Club Soda
- 1/4 tsp Butterfly Pea Powder
- 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
- 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
Method
- Add the club soda to a mixing glass or Pyrex measuring cup. Add the butterfly pea powder and whisk until well blended. It will foam a little.
- Add the gin, elderflower liqueur and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to combine.
- Add the butterfly pea powder mixture to the shaker and gently stir.
- Strain into an ice filled Halloween glass. Add the lemon juice and gently stir. It will change from blue to pink. Note-You can also add dry ice in place of the ice cubes (add after the lemon juice). Be careful not to touch it and always wait until it’s completely evaporated before drinking it. Cheers!
